Haynes Photos of Yellowstone National Park

Frank J. Haynes became the official photographer of Yellowstone National Park in 1884. First employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1875 to record the scenic train route, Haynes was entranced by the beauty of Yellowstone. He photographed the park from its time as an unpopulated natural wilderness through the changes when the first tourist arrived. Haynes photographed natural features of the park -geysers, colorful geothermal lakes, landscapes, and animals, as well as historic park improvements - bridges, roads, stagecoaches, and the first tourist.

Haynes established a professional photo finishing lab and print shop near Old Faithful Geyser in 1897. His photos and first set of postcards (1900) became very popular with tourist. Haynes introduced the country to Yellowstone National Park through his black and white photos, hand-tinted postcards, and stereocards.

In his father's tradition, Jack E. Haynes continued the family business when his father retired in 1916. He opened several "Haynes Photo Shops" throughout the park and earned exclusive rights to sell photos within the park.

The set of Haynes Photos offered in this collection are circa 1920.
