Native American Germantown Rug woven for a Mason or Lodge

Description: This excellent nineteenth century tapestry rug is woven from "Germantown" wool. The circa 1890 rug contains many symbolic motifs associated with the fraternal Scottish Rite Masons order. Included are the plumb line, the five point star, the compass and square, the three candles, and the tiled lodge floor. The rug is tightly woven, symmetrical, and lays flat. The colors remain strong and vibrant on both sides. There is some minor damage, most notably a series of tack holes along the top and one selvage break of 1" ... but no unraveling. There are also a few small stains (noted in the photos on the attached page) an area of roughed up wool.

A nearly identical weaving is in Navajo Pictorial Weaving 1880-1950 by Tyrone Campbell and Joel and Kate Kopp on page 122... there are two tapestries on this page. The second tapestry, smaller and not as interesting, sold for $5700 at Bonhams.

Yei'bi'chi - Yeibichai Navajo Rug

Description: This intricate and colorful Yei'bi'chi (Yeibichai, Yeibechai, Yeibechi - various spellings) rug depicts the ceremonial nine day dance performed by the Yei, a Navajo Holy Person. The "Yeibichai" weavings are typically more animated in their profile illustrations of the dancing Yei than the more commonly known static "Yei" weavings with their flat front view of the dancers.

This finely woven rug is vertically oriented with two rows of dancers. Each dancer is uniquely costumed in multiple colors and patterns - a true "tour de force" for the weaver. This early 20th Century rug (circa 1935) is in pristine condition with no fading, tears, or wear.
